Summary: 

This course provides an introduction to Arabic reading and writing skills and a basic understanding of the language for students who have little or no previous knowledge of Arabic. The course will be divided into two parts: the first focusing on Arabic script and phonetic decoding, and the second part equipping students with the ability to identify fundamental features of Quranic Arabic script and phonology. By the end of the course, students will be able to read fluently, write what they hear proficiently and navigate their way through the Quran independently. They will feel confident in the foundations of the language and will be ready to move on to introductory study of Arabic grammar. The reading skills obtained in this course will also provide a springboard for future learning of tajwīd (the science of Quranic recitation)

Summary: 

This course is designed to build on this foundational knowledge and develop students' basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the Arabic language. This level will equip them with the ability to communicate in different tenses and with different structures which they will not only be able to use, but also recognize in a variety of texts. This level will also work on developing their speaking and listening skills to enable them to engage in conversations with a greater depth of comprehension.

  4. Students enrolling in this course should have knowledge of beginner-intermediate level grammar topics and a strong grasp of the rules needed to construct and understand a variety of sentences with the aid of a dictionary.

Summary: 

This course is aimed at students who have a thorough knowledge of all the topics covered in levels 1A, 1B and 2A. It is designed to give students an understanding of some of the nuances of the Arabic language, introducing them, for example, to a variety of exceptions to the rules learned in previous levels. By the end of this level students should be able to engage in detailed conversations concerning their own personal lives as well as more general topics ranging from religion to current affairs. They should be able to identify grammatical features in texts, correctly read unvowelled texts, and compose texts of their own in a variety of styles.

This level consolidates the grammatical constructs covered so far and introduces students to the concept of Verb Forms, which constitute the backbone of the Arabic language. Students are taught to identify a number of these forms and manipulate roots to express different meanings in their own writing. This level prepares students to enter the realms of more advanced grammar and the translation of more complex text in future levels.

This level builds upon the content covered in previous levels with an emphasis on the application and recognition of grammatical rules and structures in different texts. This is intended to strengthen students’ comprehension of Arabic writing, and to consolidate the grammatical skills they need to express themselves in the language.

  4. Students enrolling in this course should have a cursory knowledge of the names, shapes and sounds of Arabic letters, as well as the ability to read and write the Arabic script. Some understanding of grammar and vocabulary will be needed in this course.

Summary: 

The Conversation track utilizes the al-ʿArabiyya li-l-Nāshiʾīn curriculum, building speaking and conversation skills from the beginner up to the more advanced level through interactive classes which allow students to participate in real time. The curriculum covers everyday conversation topics and integrates listening, comprehension, and writing skills, gradually increasing vocabulary as students progress through the program. Recorded lessons included in the curriculum offer an alternative to traveling to Arabic-speaking countries to put listening and conversation skills into practice. In addition to these recorded lessons and the textbook, in-class practice allows students to apply these skills with the instructor and classmates.

In Level 1, students at the beginner level progress in their use of the Arabic language and are able to partake in simple conversations. Through the recorded lessons students begin to recognize new vocabulary words and understand their meanings, increasing their personal word bank.

In Level 2, students advance to more complex conversational skills and gain the ability to make simple sentences based on the texts studied in class. Students will gain knowledge of Arabic phrases and new vocabulary words through the lessons and class activities.

Classes last approximately 1.5 hours each. Live attendance is not required but recommended whenever possible. Recordings of the sessions will be made available for registered students who cannot attend live.

Offered: Part 1 of this course is offered in the Fall term of each year, and Part 2 is offered in the Spring. Completion of Part 1 is recommended but not required to enroll in Part 2.

Prerequisites

  1. Students should be women above the age of 17.
  2. Arabic Conversation Level 3B or equivalent knowledge.
  3. Arabic Grammar Level 3B or equivalent knowledge.

Summary: A continuation of Part 1, this course will continue to provide students the opportunity to hone their Arabic skills in preparation for the upper levels of the Arabic Program. The focus in this course will be on reading, vocabulary, and comprehension of Islamic texts. Activities will be provided at different levels to cater to the needs of students at varying levels. Anse Raghad will meet periodically with students throughout the course to touch base and review.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the weekly online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, and review and sit for a final exam.

Placement:

If you are unsure about your level, email ribaat.arabic@rabata.org to request a placement test. Once you have submitted and tests have been assessed, you will receive a recommendation for the appropriate course for your level.

$100.00 (not including the cost of the course materials)

$20.00 late registration fee after January 20th (if seats are available)

Auditing is not available for the Arabic Program.
