Summary: An in-depth study of the sixty companions discussed in the book Stars in the Prophet’s Orbit. Students will learn their stories, draw conclusions about Islamic precepts from their lives, understand their relationship to the Prophet (s), and derive personal lessons from their lives. Students will apply same to an additional companion upon whom research will be done.

The first thirty companions of this text are covered in Part 1 of the course, and the second thirty are covered in Part 2. It is not required to complete part 1 before part 2.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, write a term paper, and review and sit for a final exam.

Summary: Islamic spirituality is an important part of religious life. This course will take a birds-eye view of the origins of Islamic spirituality and explore the principles and practices which developed soon after the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Students will take a historical look at this development, investigate some branches of spiritual practice, and develop an understanding of the related terms and practices.

The course will discuss the spirits of both the living and the dead and the relationship between them with emphasis on the spirit of the dead and the questions and controversies that surround its departure, the grave, the Barzakh, and what the living should (and should not) do in regard to their own souls and to the souls of others.

Summary: This course provides an introduction to Arabic reading and writing skills and a basic understanding of the language for students who have little or no previous knowledge of Arabic. The course will be divided into two parts: the first focusing on Arabic script and phonetic decoding, and the second part equipping students with the ability to identify fundamental features of Quranic Arabic script and phonology. By the end of the course, students will be able to read fluently, write what they hear proficiently and navigate their way through the Quran independently. They will feel confident in the foundations of the language and will be ready to move on to introductory study of Arabic grammar. The reading skills obtained in this course will also provide a springboard for future learning of tajwīd (the science of Quranic recitation).

  2. ARA Conversation Level 1A or equivalent knowledge
  3. ARA Grammar Level 1B or equivalent knowledge. The two courses may also be taken simultaneously.
  4. Students enrolling in this course should have a cursory knowledge of the names, shapes and sounds of Arabic letters, as well as the ability to read and write the Arabic script. Some understanding of grammar and vocabulary will be needed in this course.

Summary: 

The Conversation track utilizes the al-ʿArabiyya li-l-Nāshiʾīn curriculum, building speaking and conversation skills from the beginner up to the more advanced level through interactive classes which allow students to participate in real time. The curriculum covers everyday conversation topics and integrates listening, comprehension, and writing skills, gradually increasing vocabulary as students progress through the program. Recorded lessons included in the curriculum offer an alternative to traveling to Arabic-speaking countries to put listening and conversation skills into practice. In addition to these recorded lessons and the textbook, in-class practice allows students to apply these skills with the instructor and classmates.

In Level 1, students at the beginner level progress in their use of the Arabic language and are able to partake in simple conversations. Through the recorded lessons students begin to recognize new vocabulary words and understand their meanings, increasing their personal word bank.

  4. Students enrolling in this course should have knowledge of beginner-intermediate level grammar topics and a strong grasp of the rules needed to construct and understand a variety of sentences with the aid of a dictionary.

Summary: This course is aimed at students who have a thorough knowledge of all the topics covered in levels 1A, 1B and 2A. It is designed to give students an understanding of some of the nuances of the Arabic language, introducing them, for example, to a variety of exceptions to the rules learned in previous levels. By the end of this level students should be able to engage in detailed conversations concerning their own personal lives as well as more general topics ranging from religion to current affairs. They should be able to identify grammatical features in texts, correctly read unvowelled texts, and compose texts of their own in a variety of styles.
