Full Summer-2020 - Arabic Poetry: Language Skills in Context

Course Category: Arabic| Level 3 Course

Classes last approximately 1.5 hours each. Live attendance is not required but recommended whenever possible. Recordings of the sessions will be made available for registered students who cannot attend live.

Prerequisites

  • Students should be women above the age of 17.
  • Arabic Grammar Level 3B or equivalent knowledge. 
  • Arabic Conversation Level 3B or equivalent knowledge. The two courses may also be taken simultaneously.
  • Students enrolling in this level should have a firm grasp of foundational and intermediate-level grammatical features of the Arabic language, and will be confident in reading and writing the script.
  • Placement: New students in the Arabic program are required to submit a placement test to be placed at the correct level. The placement test can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. Once you have submitted and tests have been assessed, you will receive a recommendation for the appropriate course for your level.

    Summary: In this course, students will continue the study of the Arabic language in the context of Arabic poetry. They will implement reading, writing, grammar, and conversation skills learned in Levels 1-3 to understand poetry and access the beauty of the Arabic language. Students will build vocabulary, review grammar skills, and put comprehension and expression skills into practice in a whole new way.

    Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, and complete a final test.

    Prerequisites

  • Students should be women above the age of 17.
  • TAJ 101 & 102 (Previously QUR 101: "Explanation and Recitation: Juzuʾ ʿAmma").
  • Students enrolling in this course must be able to decode and read Arabic text comfortably (ARA 100 and ARA 101). Understanding of Arabic is beneficial but not required.

  • Summary: 
    A study of the science of tajwīd accompanied by an instructor-led recitation of Juzuʾ ʿAmma. This is a two-part course:

    1. Students will gain an understanding of introductory tajwīd concepts (including points of articulation - makhārij - and letter attributes - ifāt) during weekly online sessions with the instructor.
    2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher, either online or locally, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has read through Juzuʾ ʿAmma with her assigned tajwīd instructor, having demonstrated the ability to pronounce each letter to the standardized and acceptable level.

    Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, recite the assigned amount to the assigned tajwid instructor, and review and sit for a midterm and a final exam.

    Placement: New students in the Ribaat Tajwid Program should complete an assessment with a tajwid instructor. Based on that, they will receive a recommendation on the best course to start with.     Prerequisites

  • TAJ 101 & 102: "Quran Fluency"
  • TAJ 201: "Tajwid Part 1: Letters & Phonetics"
  • Students enrolling in this course must be able to decode and read Arabic text comfortably (ARA 100 and ARA 101). Understanding of Arabic is beneficial but not required. 
  • Knowledge of the points of articulation (makhārij) and letter attributes (ifāt).
  • Placement: New students in the Ribaat Tajwid Program should complete an assessment with a tajwid instructor. Based on that, they will receive a recommendation on the best course to start with. To arrange an appointment, kindly email tajwid.assess@rabata.org, and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible inshallah.

    Summary: Building upon concepts taken in QUR 201, students will complete the study of the rules of tajwīd, accompanied by an instructor-led recitation of the second half of Juzuʾ ʿAmma. This is a two-part course:

    1. Students will gain an understanding of the rules of tajwīd (proper pronunciation of the Holy Quran) during weekly online sessions with the instructor.
    2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher, either online or locally, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has read through Juzuʾ ʿAmma with her assigned tajwīd teacher, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level. Upon completion, advanced students may begin a recitation of Juzuʾ Tabārak.

    Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, recite the assigned amount to the assigned tajwid instructor, and review and sit for a mid term and a final exam.

    Summary: In the Khitmah Project, students will recite the Holy Quran from Surat al-Fāṭiḥa to Surat al-Nās to their assigned tajwīd instructors, as a preparation and foundation for beginning with memorization. This is a two-part course: 

    1. Students will attend a weekly online session with the instructor to follow up on their progress and learn about the wonders of the Holy Quran. 
    2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher, either online or locally, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has read through the Holy Quran from cover to cover with her assigned tajwīd teacher, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level.

    Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the weekly online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, recite the assigned amount to the assigned tajwid instructor, and submit a term project. The course is complete when the student recites the entire Quran, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwid at the acceptable level. Students should keep enrolling in the course each term until they have completed their recitation.

    Summary: A self-paced memorization course, students will set a personal memorization target each term and recite to a tajwīd teacher. This is a two-part course:

    1. Students will attend a weekly online session with the instructor to follow up on their progress and receive inspirations and tips on memorizing the Holy Quran, achieving effective memorization, and overcoming hurdles.
    2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher, either online or locally, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has recited the amount agreed upon at the start of the term, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level.

    Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the weekly online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, recite the assigned amount to the assigned tajwid instructor, and submit a term project.
