Summer 2021 - Uṣūl al-Fiqh: Foundations of Fiqh | Parts 1 & 2

Course Description: Usul al-Fiqh has always occupied a prominent place in the teaching curricula of Islamic institutions of legal learning.  As a discipline of shari’a, Usul al-Fiqh is concerned with the sources of Islamic law, their order of priority, and the methods by which legal rules may be deduced from the source materials of the shari’a. It is also concerned with regulating the exercise of ijtihad.

This course offers an advanced study of Usul al-Fiqh in which the students will be introduced to the legislative sources of Islamic Law, rules of interpretation, and the methodology used by the jurist to produce the rules of fiqh.

Studying Usul al-Fiqh enables the students to develop a profound appreciation of the Islamic law and the high standards applied by the jurists throughout Islamic history in their effort to adhere to the commands and goals of the shari’a while proving its miraculous flexibility and responsiveness to the ever-changing needs of the Muslim community.

Duration: 14 weeks

Classes last approximately 2 hours each. Live attendance is recommended whenever possible for the best learning experience. Recordings of the sessions will be made available for registered students who cannot attend live.

Daylight savings time will begin in the United States on Sunday, November 1, 2020. Depending on where you live, this may or may not affect your class timing. In countries where DST is not applied at all, class will be one hour later starting November 1st.

Offered: This course is offered continuously over a full year. Classes do not stop during the regular semester breaks, but students need to re-enroll in each subsequent part.

Prerequisites

  1. Students should be women above the age of 17.
  2. Successful completion of all Ribaat Level 1 and Level 2 Core course.
  3. Successful completion of at least one Ribaat elective.
  4. SIR 301, 302 and 401.

Course Description: A continuation of the Level 3 Sira courses, this course continues the study of the life of Prophet Muhammad (s) in detail. In Parts 3 and 4, the course will examine the major events and incidents that took place after the hijra to Medina, extrapolating the wisdom and lessons one can gain from them. Weekly assignments focus on these lessons learned, enabling students to draw parallels to modern day struggles in their own lives and make lasting changes, following in the footsteps of the Prophet (s).

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the weekly online lectures, complete one or more weekly assignments, read the assigned material, complete a term project, and review and sit for a final exam.

This is an online course so students will need:

  1. Access to internet with an internet speed of at least 2 Mbps recommended for best performance. 
  2. Headphones, camera and microphone may be required for in-class participation. 
  3. To access the live class, students will need a computer, smartphone, or tablet/iPad with the AdobeConnect app. 
  4. To access recordings of the sessions on a smart device, students may need to install the Puffin or Photon browser.

Course Description: A practical course providing students the opportunity to practice reading the Holy Quran and master the skill of decoding. Students will learn the Nooraniyya method of decoding Quranic script, learn the types of Arabic sounds and how to pronounce them correctly, and be introduced to the science of tajwīd. These skills will be put into practice in class with the instructor, and students will also gain strategies to practice at home. By the end of this course, students should be able to recognize all the Arabic letters and vowel sounds with ease, and be able to pronounce most of them correctly.

Summer 2021 - Tajwid Part 1: Letters & Phonetics

Course Description: A study of the science of tajwīd accompanied by an instructor-led recitation of Juzuʾ ʿAmma. This is a two-part course:

1.      Students will gain an understanding of introductory tajwīd concepts (including points of articulation - makhārij - and letter attributes - ṣifāt) during weekly online sessions with the instructor.

2.      Students will be divided into small groups and have an additional weekly session in which they will work with a recitation teacher. This part of the course will be complete when the student has demonstrated the ability to read short sūras of the Quran and pronounce each letter correctly.

Summer 2021 - Tajwid Part 2: Rules & Rhythm of Recitation

Course Description: Building upon concepts taken in TAJ 201, students will complete the study of the rules of tajwīd, accompanied by an instructor-led recitation of the second half of Juzuʾ ʿAmma. This is a two-part course:

  1. Students will gain an understanding of the rules of tajwīd (proper pronunciation of the Holy Quran) during weekly online sessions with the instructor.
  2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher online, with whom she will work in a small group. This part of the course will be complete when the student has read through Juzuʾ ʿAmma with her assigned tajwīd teacher, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level.

Summer 2021 - Accelerated Tajwid Rules

Prerequisites: 

  • Students should be women above the age of 17.
  • Ability to read the Holy Quran fluently with application of tajwid rules. Tajwid assessment is required. 
  • Arabic Level 1: ARA 101, 102, 103, 104. Understanding of Arabic is beneficial but not required.

Course Description: An accelerated study of the science of tajwīd. In this course, students will gain an understanding of all tajwīd concepts (including points of articulation - makhārij - and letter attributes - ṣifāt, proper pronunciation of the Holy Quran) during weekly online sessions with the instructor. This course is a fast-paced review of tajwid rules for those who have mastered the practice of recitation and need to learn or relearn the theory.

Each student, based on their tajwid assessment, will take:
Either: TAJ 201 + 202
Or: TAJ 203

Summer 2021 - Quran Khitmah Project

Course Description: In the Khitmah Project, students will recite the Holy Quran from Surat al-Fāṭiḥa to Surat al-Nās to their assigned tajwīd instructors, as a preparation and foundation for beginning with memorization. This is a two-part course: 

1.      Students will attend a weekly online session with the instructor to follow up on their progress, work together to achieve consistent Quran reading habits, and receive inspirations about the Holy Quran. 

2.      Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher online, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has read through the Holy Quran from start to finish with her assigned tajwīd teacher, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level.

Course Description: A self-paced memorization course, students will set a personal memorization target each term and recite to a tajwīd teacher. This is a two-part course:

  1. Students will attend a weekly online session with the instructor to follow up on their progress and receive inspirations and tips on memorizing the Holy Quran, achieving effective memorization, and overcoming hurdles.
  2. Each student will be paired with a certified tajwīd teacher online, with whom she will work one-on-one. This part of the course will be complete when the student has recited the amount agreed upon at the start of the term, having demonstrated the ability to apply the rules of tajwīd to the standardized and acceptable level.

Summer 2021 - Introduction to Arabic

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to Arabic reading and writing skills and a basic understanding of the language for students who have little or no previous knowledge of Arabic. The course will be divided into two parts: the first focusing on Arabic script and phonetic decoding, and the second part equipping students with the ability to identify fundamental features of Quranic Arabic script and phonology. By the end of the course, students will be able to read fluently, write what they hear proficiently and navigate their way through the Quran independently. They will feel confident in the foundations of the language and will be ready to move on to introductory study of Arabic grammar. The reading skills obtained in this course will also provide a springboard for future learning of tajwīd (the science of Quranic recitation).

Course Description: The course is designed to equip students with knowledge of foundational grammar constructs to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the Arabic language. This will enable them to begin to access a variety of texts, from Quran and Hadith to modern newspaper articles and literary texts. The specially designed grammar curriculum, in coordination with the conversation course, gives students both the ability to comprehend a range of basic vocabulary and identify and utilize an increasingly broad array of grammatical structures, setting them firmly on the path for future learning and development of these skills.
