Summary: This course provides an introduction to Arabic reading and writing skills and a basic understanding of the language for students who have little or no previous knowledge of Arabic. The course will be divided into two parts: the first focusing on Arabic script and phonetic decoding, and the second part equipping students with the ability to identify fundamental features of Quranic Arabic script and phonology. By the end of the course, students will be able to read fluently, write what they hear proficiently and navigate their way through the Quran independently. They will feel confident in the foundations of the language and will be ready to move on to introductory study of Arabic grammar. The reading skills obtained in this course will also provide a springboard for future learning of tajwīd (the science of Quranic recitation).

Students enrolling in this course should have a cursory knowledge of the names, shapes and sounds of Arabic letters, as well as the ability to read and write the Arabic script. An understanding of grammar or any vocabulary is not a prerequisite for this stage.

Summary: 

The course is designed to equip students with knowledge of foundational grammar constructs to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the Arabic language. This will enable them to begin to access a variety of texts, from Quran and Hadith to modern newspaper articles and literary texts. The specially designed grammar curriculum, in coordination with the conversation course, gives students both the ability to comprehend a range of basic vocabulary and identify and utilize an increasingly broad array of grammatical structures, setting them firmly on the path for future learning and development of these skills.

Course Description: This level takes students well into the domain of intermediate Arabic grammar, solidifying and consolidating knowledge from previous levels and building on their reading and writing skills through application of grammar to texts and their own writing. The use of a root dictionary as a tool to aid comprehension is also stressed at this level. Students will work on their translation skills by analyzing a variety of texts, without diacritical markings.

Course Description: Students in this course will work on refining their knowledge of key grammatical constructs, and will increase their grammatical knowledge through study of more advanced concepts and exposure to a variety of Arabic texts. This level builds upon the content covered in Levels 1, 2 and 3 and takes students into the world of more advanced Arabic grammar skills. By including a greater focus on application of skills through reading, the aim at this level is to strengthen students’ comprehension of Arabic writing, and to consolidate the grammatical skills they need to express themselves in the language.

The Conversation track utilizes the al-ʿArabiyya li-l-Nāshiʾīn curriculum, building speaking and conversation skills from the beginner up to the more advanced level through interactive classes which allow students to participate in real time. The curriculum covers everyday conversation topics and integrates listening, comprehension, and writing skills, gradually increasing vocabulary as students progress through the program. Recorded lessons included in the curriculum offer an alternative to traveling to Arabic-speaking countries to put listening and conversation skills into practice. In addition to these recorded lessons and the textbook, in-class practice allows students to apply these skills with the instructor and classmates.

In Level 1, students at the beginner level progress in their use of the Arabic language and are able to partake in simple conversations. Through the recorded lessons students begin to recognize new vocabulary words and understand their meanings, increasing their personal word bank.
