Placement: Once enrolled in the Ribaat Arabic Program, students will be placed in the course that they have reached. New students will be automatically placed in Introduction to Arabic, unless a placement test is submitted.

Introduction to Arabic - Fall 2018

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to Arabic reading and writing skills and a basic understanding of the language for students who have little or no previous knowledge of Arabic. The course will be divided into two parts: the first focusing on Arabic script and phonetic decoding, and the second part equipping students with the ability to identify fundamental features of Quranic Arabic script and phonology. By the end of the course, students will be able to read fluently, write what they hear proficiently and navigate their way through the Quran independently. They will feel confident in the foundations of the language and will be ready to move on to introductory study of Arabic grammar. The reading skills obtained in this course will also provide a springboard for future learning of tajwīd (the science of Quranic recitation).

Course Description: The course is designed to equip students with knowledge of foundational grammar constructs to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the Arabic language. This will to enable them to begin to access a variety of texts, from Quran and Hadith to modern newspaper articles and literary texts. The specially designed Grammar curriculum, in coordination with the Conversation course, gives students both the ability to comprehend a range of basic vocabulary and identify and utilize an increasingly broad array of grammatical structures, setting them firmly on the path for future learning and development of these skills.

Course Description: In this course, students are introduced to more complex grammatical constructs and are aided in applying these to their own writing. This level aims to equip students with the ability to convey and discuss their own ideas as well as comprehend a variety of texts, both with and without diacritical marks.

Course Description: This level takes students well into the domain of intermediate Arabic grammar, solidifying and consolidating knowledge from previous levels and building on their reading and writing skills through application of grammar to texts and their own writing. The use of a root dictionary as a tool to aid comprehension is also stressed at this level. Students will work on their translation skills by analyzing a variety of texts, without diacritical markings.

  • Students enrolling in this level will have a firm grasp of foundational and intermediate-level grammatical features of the Arabic language (level 3B or equivalent), and will be confident in reading and writing the script.

Course Description: Students in 4A will work on refining their knowledge of key grammatical constructs, and will increase their grammatical knowledge through study of more advanced concepts and exposure to a variety of Arabic texts. This level builds upon the content covered in Levels 1, 2 and 3 and takes students into the world of more advanced Arabic grammar skills. By including a greater focus on application of skills through reading, the aim at this level is to strengthen students’ comprehension of Arabic writing, and to consolidate the grammatical skills they need to express themselves in the language.

Course Description: The Conversation track utilizes the al-ʿArabiyya li-l-Nāshiʾīn curriculum, building speaking and conversation skills from the beginner up to the more advanced level through interactive classes which allow students to participate in real time. The curriculum covers everyday conversation topics and integrates listening, comprehension, and writing skills, gradually increasing vocabulary as students progress through the program. Recorded lessons included in the curriculum offer an alternative to traveling to Arabic-speaking countries to put listening and conversation skills into practice. In addition to these recorded lessons and the textbook, in-class practice allows students to apply these skills with the instructor and classmates.

In Level 1, students at the beginner level progress in their use of the Arabic language and are able to partake in simple conversations. Through the recorded lessons students begin to recognize new vocabulary words and understand their meanings, increasing their personal word bank.

Arabic Advanced Self-Study | Part 1 - Fall 2018

Course Dates: September 16 - December 23, 2018
Timings: Sundays, 9:00 am CST/3:00 pm GMT. 

This course will be self-study with some sessions led by Anse Raghad. Live attendance at the online sessions is highly recommended to achieve full benefit. Students who cannot attend the scheduled sessions must make arrangements with the instructor to fulfill the necessary coursework.

Prerequisites

      • Students enrolling in the program must be women above the age of 17.
      • Successful completion of all Arabic Level 4 courses.

Course Description: This course is designed for students of the Arabic Program in preparation for level 5. It will provide students the opportunity to hone their Arabic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, as well as increase their vocabulary in preparation for the more advanced levels of the  Arabic program. Students will be assigned several units, through which they will proceed at their own pace and their own level. Anse Raghad will meet with students throughout the term to monitor progress and hear presentations.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the online sessions, complete weekly assignments as assigned by the instructor, present on a topic in Arabic, and review and sit for a final assessment. Students will need a minimum of 3 hours of study time each week to complete the course requirements.
